瑜伽和太极在本质上有着许多相同之处,两者结合研习,就是以太极的宜动宜静、刚柔相济的动作及精髓,并将瑜伽之动作、呼吸、意识三者相结合。在练习瑜极时将通过各种动作以运气功法来达到调节体内脏腑、经络气血阴阳平衡、延衰驻颜、轻身健体、增添气韵、美化形体的一种强身健体方法。

它的最大特点是阴阳协调。中医认为:人的形体肢节、肌肤毛发、五官爪甲等无不与机体内脏腑经络气血紧密联系,只有脏腑经络气血功能健旺,元气充沛,才能润发美颜即所谓有诸内者必行诸外

练习的基本原理是调身、调息、调心并强调 “意气合一”。
瑜极既可通过脑和神经系统,也可直接作用于各组织系统、器官乃至细胞;瑜极的独到之处就是意念的引导,由于意念具有正向信息作用,从而使整体功能趋向于高度协调、高度序化、高度激发的状态。

瑜极的强身功效卓著,全身强健,容貌自然更加健美亮泽。气功可发挥良好的整体运行效果,使人体似日月、似自然、动静适合,运化自然,去病强身。
  
通过练习瑜极可以达到以下几方面目的:   

  1. 有效地消除疲劳,恢复体力,使练功人保持旺盛的精力

现代社会生活节奏越来越快,带给人们的心理紧张也越来越大。作为紧张的一个常见的反应就是疲劳。处于疲劳状态的人往往精神倦怠,皮肉松弛,而瑜极锻炼可以有效地缓解和恢复神经系统的过度兴奋,迅速地消除机体的疲劳,使人干起事来充满活力。 

  1. 培育真气,抵抗早衰

中医认为人的五官、肌肤等是五脏之气外在的反映和表现。真气充足,五脏气血旺盛,五脏的外在表现也必然充满了生机和润泽,呈现一种健康的美。例如,中医理论中有 “肝开窍于目” 的说法,肝气充足则目光炯炯有神,通过锻炼,真气越来越充足,抗病能力增强,就可免去因患多种疾病而引起的过早衰老,使青春常驻。    

  1. 可改善微循环,使面部红润、皮肤润泽

瑜极锻炼可以改善全身的微循环功能,使更多的毛细血管开放,血管内血液流速加快,从而促进组织的新陈代谢,使皮肤养分增加,皮肤组织得到改善,变得细腻润泽。另外,还可通过调节内分泌系统的功能来达到防止皮肤衰老和失去弹性,美化皮肤的作用。  

  1. 可以美化人的气质,陶冶人的性情

真正的美是一种面部与全身、形体与精神的和谐统一。其中人的精神面貌、气质、风度等更是形之于外的内在表现。瑜极锻炼中的调心手法不仅含有教人意守入静的内容,而且也具有陶冶性情的重要作用。平时注意修身养性,可使练功人的心身与外部环境达到一种平衡,心情舒畅,心胸开阔。
